Sopapilla Recipe -



  • 1-3/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup cold water


  1. Sift all dry ingredients into a mixing bowl

  2. Cut shortening in like you would for a pie crust

  3. Add cold water gradually. Mix just enough to hold together

  4. Knead on a floured surface until very smooth

  5. Cover, let dough rest for 5 minutes

  6. On floured surface roll dough to 1/8 inch thickness

  7. Cut dough into 3 inch squares

  8. Drop 1 or 2 into deep fryer. When they rise 'fan' with the oil until they begin to rise then turn them over.

  9. Remove from oil when light golden brown and drain

Serve hot with honey
